Oftentimes, even when parents know that their teens need help, the decision to seek help is still a difficult one to make. The best way to help a troubled teen is to accept that there is a problem and to move from there. Knowing what treatment options are available for your teen is a good place to start. Therapy for troubled teens is divided to two major categories. Outpatient Programs for Troubled Teens Outpatient treatment can be a great way to deliver therapy for troubled teens who just got home from residential treatment in order for them to get back to their daily life. There are many different kinds of outpatient therapy such as 12-step programs, individual therapy, art therapy and more. However, in some cases, outpatient therapy is not a sufficient solution for troubled teens, particularly if they are struggling with severe issues of defiance, sexually acting out, drug addiction, suicidal tendencies, and more. Residential Programs for Troubled Teens Troubled teens can benefit from being removed from negative peer relationships or harmful social situations where they are not flourishing. For example, teens who are depressed can benefit from being taken out of a school situation which is not helpful to their emotional state. They can get stabilized in a supportive and safe environment before going back to their home and school while assisted by aftercare or outpatient programs. Teens who are getting mixed up with the wrong crowd can have a better chance of recovering and getting back on track if their recovery is continuous and uninterrupted. The great thing about it is that troubled teens will be able to develop good study habits as well and experience how it feels to enjoy academic achievement again. It gives teens a chance to believe in themselves again and to recover their self-esteem. There are many kinds of residential programs for troubled teens. There are therapeutic boarding schools, wilderness therapy programs, residential youth treatment programs, as well as psychiatric hospitals for more intensive psychiatric treatment.
