Raising a child isn't an easy task. The thought that you are responsible for the well-being of another person is a bit overwhelming. Even the smallest thing that you do or don't do can have long-term consequences for them. Parenting can be a positive experience both for you and your child. Here are a few tips for positive parenting that you may find useful:
- Encourage your child to play - Kids can grow up too fast these days. It's important for parents to appreciate the fact that playing is essential in a child's development. Playing can present children with ways where they can find natural solutions to problems, learn how to communicate, and create a positive bond between children and their parents. Parents who spend time playing with their children are more likely to form a positive relationship with them as they grow older.
- Communicate with your child - Talk to your child, listen to them and let them know that you're really taking in what they're saying. Make eye contact, use non-verbal communication like smiling, hugging, kissing and touching.
- Encourage a healthy lifestyle - Aside from encouraging physical activity, make sure that your child's diet is healthy by providing healthy meals and snacks. Make healthy food easily available in your household. It's also better to encourage physical activity through limiting access to the TV and video games.
- Encourage your child's desire for learning - Instead of entertaining your child with TV shows, cultivate in your child's intellectual life by encouraging them to read books. Make an effort to be supportive of your child's school activities. Take them to zoos, museums, and libraries to encourage their natural curiosity.
- Encourage your child to ask questions - Don't react negatively or with exasperation when your child asks too many questions. Instead, encourage your child to ask more questions. It's better to become your child's first source of information. Just answer questions as openly and candidly as you can. If you don't know the answer, find it out together (whenever possible).
- Appreciate your child's uniqueness - Your child is unlike any other child in the world. As such, you will be the expert when it comes to him/her. Embrace your child's individuality. Avoid comparing them with other children or with their siblings.
- Set your child up for success - Don't make unreasonable and unreachable goals and rules for your child. Create rules that your child can achieve and teach them how they can achieve this. Support them and set them up for success instead of setting them up for failure by expecting something from them which they are not prepared or equipped for.
- Take care of yourself - Don't make your entire world revolve around your children. Your children will have a better chance of being happy if they are going to be raised by parents who are also happy with how their life is going. Set aside some time for yourself so that you can recharge and rejuvenate yourself is as important as giving time and attention to your children.
