Single Parent Support Groups

Being a single parent can be tough both emotionally and financially. Single parents support groups can be a crucial part of coping with the thought of parenting children alone. Here are a few reasons why single parent support groups can be helpful:

  • Activities - Many of these support groups have activities that single parents can enjoy. It's a great way to meet people who have the same challenges and help each other through a difficult part of their lives. Having fun and doing something interesting together can be a great way to inspire positivity.
  • Talking - Sometimes, listening to people who are in the same situation as you are and being able to talk to people without fear of being judged and rejected is a significant help. Seeing how other people surmounted the same situation is also very encouraging.
  • Learning - Many support groups provide useful tips and information on topics relevant to single parents. There are things that single parents must learn to deal with, like learning how to talk to their teens about sensitive topics such as sex, drugs, alcohol, and more. Single parents can also learn about how to budget their income, how to stretch their income, how to augment their income, and more. Being a single parent doesn't come with a manual. There are new things to learn and get used to, and single parent support groups can help with that.
  • Find new interests - Attending a single parent support group can be a great way to get introduced to new interests. It's important for single parents to find some "alone time", and not just be focused on their children.
  • A useful network - Because of the people you'll meet in single parents support groups, you'll also be enlarging your network, in a sense. From something as simple as knowing people who can form a babysitting co-op with you to knowing people who can help you out with various things you'll need in life.
  • Find new friends - You'll at least get to meet new people who can be your friends eventually. At some point in time, when you're ready for a new romantic involvement, it could be a great place to start looking.

Despite the many stereotypes that portray support groups like this in a negative light, single parent support groups can be a great help at a crucial time of your life. Whether you're divorced, lost a spouse, or got pregnant without getting married, being a parent is a challenge enough and you don't really have to face it alone. It's also a good idea for single parents to get the support of their family.

Raising a child alone is not an easy task. Finding a support group in your local church is a good place to start looking. There are even support groups online where you can meet virtually.
