4 Challenges to Alternative Schooling for Troubled Youth

Parenting troubled teens is a huge challenge. Keeping them in school can prove to be quite the task, and helping them achieve academic excellence is oftentimes relegated to the realm of wishful thinking. However, alternative schools for troubled teens have been enjoying considerable success in terms of the number of students that continue to college, and helping young people make a significantly positive change in their lives.

Different schools have different programs which fits children with different needs. Because of the success these schools have in helping students achieve more and become happier in the process, many parents who have troubled teens are looking at sending their teens to such schools. However, alternative schooling for troubled youth has its share of challenges.

Cost - These kinds of schools are definitely not cheap. It's one of the major considerations that parents have when looking at these schools. For example, students with ADD/ADHD usually need more help than what they would get in traditional public schools. In alternative schools, they would get more individualized attention, they'll be taught techniques to help themselves do well with their coursework, they'll be in a very small class and get individualized attention from their teachers. All this comes at a steep price. For boarding schools, the cost can be between $20,000-45,000 USD. Of course, most of these schools offer payment plans and scholarships but they're still a lot more expensive than traditional public schools.

Finding a match - When thinking about alternative schooling for troubled youth, you'll probably encounter schools that will interview your teen and check if they'll fit into the school. Some alternative schools don't accept teens with severe substance addiction, some will. On the part of parents, finding a school that matches the needs of their children involve a lot of research. For teens that don't really have a problem with substance addiction, being mixed with children who do have this problem may cause new problems of their own. There's also the question of the kind of therapy they provide, the kind of activities that are available for students, and more. Finding a school that fits sometimes take a lot of effort, but it's an important part of the selection process. For example, for children who really need to remember to take their medication on time, being in a boarding school may not be a realistic idea unless the school also provides support in terms of actively making sure the students take their medication on time. Not all schools offer this kind of service.

Separation from parents - Majority of alternative schools for troubled youth are boarding schools. Teens are just better helped this way. This separation from parents often pose a challenge. For parents, making this difficult decision is a challenge. For teens, surviving away from home, away from their circle of friends, being in a new environment where their habits and thought patterns will be challenged is never easy.

Aftercare - Providing alternative schooling for troubled youth is a good idea that could turn the lives of these teens around. However, it's only part of the solution. For many alternative schools, parents are encouraged to take an active role in the education and development of their teens. There are family affairs and family counseling from time to time in order to help young people reintegrate to their home and community as smoothly as possible. Finding a school with a good aftercare program is crucial to the continued success of troubled teens. This is especially true for teens who want to transition back to mainstream schooling and just need to go to an alternative school to make that transition as smooth as possible. Without a good aftercare program, it's not unusual for troubled teens to go back to their old ways and become a lot more difficult to help the next time around.

Helping a troubled young person do well in school and in life is always a challenge. For parents, what makes this challenge a lot easier to surmount is finding the right partner to help them on this long journey.
