Summer Camps for Troubled Teens

Parents who are encountering problems with their teens on different issues often dread the coming of summer. There's too much time on young people's hands while the parents are out working. In most cases, spending an unproductive summer aggravates the situation with troubled teens. Many parents opt to send their teens to camp rather than have them lounging around the house or hanging out with bad company. However there are summer camps for troubled teens that could help them not just fill their time with activities but also learn healthy habits that would make a significant change in their lives.

There are different types of camps that you could choose from. What will be effective for them will depend on your teens needs and what you hope to achieve with the time that they spend there.

Some parents opt to send their children to boot camps, especially when they are having a hard time handling teens that are defiant and are having problems respecting authority figures at home and in school. In essence, sending your child to boot camp aims to break their spirit in order to achieve behavior modification. In many ways, this could backfire because behavior modification that becomes a product of negative discipline, confrontation and intimidation often don't really last.

In many cases, teens that are sent to boot camps also interact with other troubled teens that have more serious problems, which only aggravates the situation further. Teens that have only experimented with drugs come out with more information on how to get drugs on the street.

There are also camps that are therapeutic in nature, like wilderness camps where activities are designed to also achieve behavior modification but through different means. Living in the wilderness, away from the stressors of modern living, away from negative social interactions, and working with people who help you attain your personal goals can be very helpful. While some wilderness programs self-identify as therapeutic, others actually use therapy together with wilderness activities in order to achieve a more lasting, less superficial behavior modification.

In wilderness therapy, individual and group therapy sessions make up a large part of the program. Participants take away valuable life lessons from nature such as independence, interdependence, self-confidence, and taking responsible risks. They also get the kind of psychotherapy that is appropriate for their individual needs. This is something that's not done in youth boot camps as well. Unlike boot camps, wilderness therapy camps get to know the therapy needs of each individual and adjusts the program and the frequency of therapy as needed. The program focuses more on resolving the underlying issues that cause the symptoms (behavioral and emotional problems) rather than solely dealing with just getting rid of the symptoms.

Summers should be a meaningful time for young people. With the help of the appropriate summer camps for troubled teens, this time could not only be a lot of fun, but life-changing as well.
