Most states have laws requiring their school districts to provide alternative education to teens failing in school. Many states will even pay for a troubled teen to attend a private boarding school if the teen has been diagnosed with a problem that the school district can not accommodate. States are typically obligated to pay up to $7,000.00 a month for teens that can not make it in their school districts. Alternative schools provide much more accommodation for behavior problems then traditional high school and they usually offer a little more patience then is found in high school. In a setting with smaller class sizes, teens may benefit from a one on one environment which helps prevent them from slipping through the cracks as many candidates for alternative schooling have. Also, alternative high schools will be a little more flexible with their students in regards to attendance and homework. With the bar being greatly lowered, in some cases, the average teen who attends an alternative high school is more likely to succeed.
